In a prestigious ranking of the rising starts of the Polish legal profession Dr Szymon Okoń, legal counsel, Partner of SSW was ranked in the second position.
The 4th edition of the competition and the presentation of statuettes was held on 29 October at the Olympic Centre in Warsaw. The ranking was organised by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily and Wolters Kluwer publishing house. The jury was composed of the representatives of the lawyers' community and journalists. The title of a “rising star” of the legal profession was awarded to individuals below 35 years of age who successfully combine a solid education background with work for demanding clients.
Dr Szymon Okoń has worked for 5 years. He has been developing his professional experience in the capital markets as well as in finance and banking departments.
The competition jury characterised Dr Szymon Okoń as follows: “He is a living proof that the day may be a bit longer than 24 hours. Otherwise it is impossible to explain the fact that in October 2014 he earned a double Ph.D. degree: first, based on a dissertation titled “The oversight over an investment company in Poland” he became a doctor in law, and then, with a paper on “The capital adequacy requirements vs. brokerage house security and efficiency” he obtained, with distinction, the title of doctor of economics in the area of finance. Currently, as an assistant professor at the Chair of Investment and Capital Markets of the Poznań University of Economics he is preparing for a post-doctoral degree and is actively teaching and lecturing.”
The first position in the competition went to Katarzyna Wiśniewska, attorney-at-law from Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, The next position among the top 3 after Dr Szymon Okoń was taken by Jacek Błachut, attorney-at-law.

Dr Szymon Okoń, legal counsel, Partner at SSW Spaczyński Szczepaniak and Partners law firm became a finalist of this year's Rising Stars ranking: Lawyers – the leaders of tomorrow, organised by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily and Wolters Kluwer publishing house. This prestigious ranking presents thirty young lawyers with excellent career prospects, who were selected by a jury composed of the representatives of the lawyers' community and journalists.
The organisers of the competition underline that the title of a “rising star” will be awarded to an individual who can demonstrate a combination of a solid educational background and hands-on experience in working with demanding clients. Other aspects that will be taken into account include innovation, ability to recognise new trends, creativity as well as recommendations from clients and superiors.
The gala event during which the winner of the ranking will be announced will be held on 29 October in Warsaw.

An investment fund client who worked with SSW Spaczyński Szczepaniak & Partners finance partner Wojciech Szczepaniak describes him as: “Excellent, hardworking, available 24/7, attentive to detail, excellent negotiator.”
In the finance space Wojciech Szczepaniak acted for a construction industry leader on the financing for an acquisition. Szczepaniak also acted for a catering company on its debt restructuring via a debt for equity swap.
In the capital markets the firm is focused on debt matters. Highlights include Szczepaniak’s work for a leading construction company on its bond issue on the catalyst market. On the equity side Szczepaniak advised a manufacturer of alcoholic beverages on its dual listing on the French Euronext exchange and the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
In the M&A area the firm added Michał Badowski to its team, who previously worked for another leading Polish law firm. Major transactions include the acquisition of a logistics company by a construction player which was also supported by Piotr Spaczyński. Szczepaniak has also served companies from the renewable energy sector.
Energy and infrastructure:
Name partner Piotr Spaczyński is the key contact within the SSW energy and infrastructure team. The firm has been particularly active in mining and natural resources matters and this is backed up not only by transactional highlights but also its work alongside on the revisions and amendments made to the country’s Geology and Mining Act.
To back this up further Spaczyński is picked out specifically by clients in the mining sector, as one says: “He is professional and pragmatic in understanding clients’ needs. I also appreciate his commitment, availability and flexibility in operation. Moreover, Piotr is always up-to-date with changes in mining regulations.”

Marcin Cetnarowicz appears as the moderator at the meeting of the CCIFP discussion club titled “The cooperation with trade unions: the role of HR department in conflict resolution”
On 22 September 2015, a meeting of the experience sharing club at the French-Polish Chamber of Commerce, meeting was dedicated to various aspects of the effective implementation of HR and remuneration policy in large companies. The discussion was moderated by Marcin Cetnarowicz.
Janusz Mazurek participated in the debate titled “Relief for the Courts, Empowerment of the Attorney”
On 16 September 2015, at the offices of the National Chamber of Legal Counsels in Warsaw, a debate titled “Relief for the Courts, Empowerment of the Attorney” was held. The debate was attended by Janusz Mazurek, legal counsel and Partner at SSW Law Firm, and concerned changes to the regulations governing the remuneration of legal counsels and attorneys for representation of a lawsuit, weather appointed by the court or chosen by the defendant.
On 25 June 2015, an event organised by the Lewiatan Confederation Tax Council’s Congress was held to discuss various aspects of new standards of cooperation with the revenue office. Patrycja Goździowska, member of the Tax Council, delivered a speech on “Key dilemmas of the Tax Ordinance (current practices and practice of application, planned changes presented in the Government and in the Presidential drafts, postulates of entrepreneurs)”.
On 28 May 2015, the festival of the most interesting startup projects organised by the Agora media company was held for the fifth time. The purpose of the event was to enable innovative projects with a good business case, selected by the competition jury, to establish first contacts with potential investors and strategic partners. Lawyers from our Law Firm - Partner Michał Badowski and Associate Łukasz Kędzierski, who conduct the Law Firm’s SSW4STARTUPS programme addressed to entrepreneurs and projects from the sector of new technologies, participated in the event as mentors.
The SSW Law Firm was the sponsor of the prize for one of the finalists of Startup Fest Agora 2015 - Rombo Games, which received recognition for the surprisingly unobvious and uncompromising nature of the project presented. The project received a prize in the form of legal services to be provided by the Law Firm for the total value of PLN 10,000.
The winner of Startup Fest Agora 2015 was the Enso project – a project of a device measuring temperature, humidity, pressure and level of harmful chemical substances in the air which lead to allergies, asthma and inflammatory diseases. The sponsor of the main prize for this project was the Energa company.
The competition jury also recognised a project under the name of CivilHub. This is a social medium concentrated around bottom-up social initiatives. The prize for this project was sponsored by PKN Orlen. The special prize from Amazon Web Services went to the BuyBox project.
The best startup was selected by mentors of this year’s edition of the event, including – besides SSW lawyers – also representatives of such companies as: Energa, Agora, mBank, PKN Orlen, Deloitte, PZU, AdTaily Group, CTO Dentsu Aegis Network, WinVentures, WinQbator, VML Poland, Lubię To linked by Izobar, CEO Brand 24, funds: Protos Venture Capital, Innovation Nest, Experior Venture Fund, Hedgehog Fund and the StartUp Hub Poland Foundation. The event partner was also the chain Friends Taste Your Time.

An international conference organised by the SSW Law Firm, in cooperation with the Arbitration Court of the Lewiatan Confederation, Club Espanol de Arbitraje (Capitulo de Polonia y Ucrania) and the Legal Sciences Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences, was held on 27 May 2015 During the event, experts from all over the world discussed practical aspects of arbitration during international conflicts.
Dr Szymon Okoń – a co-author of the publication entitled “Is it a Low or High Price Anomaly? The Curious Case of the Polish Stock Market”
On 26 May 2015, Dr Szymon Okoń took part as a speaker in the XVI Conference in the series: Financial Management - Theory and Practice in Wrocław. He presented a paper in which research on finance was conducted and an analysis of share prices was performed for over 850 public companies listed in Poland in the years 2000-2014 in order to check whether the market anomaly, the so-called low-price effect (obtaining higher rates of return from shares with a lower nominal value) also takes place in the Polish capital market. The article was deemed to be the best article of the conference, receiving the Best Paper Award.

On 19 May 2015, experts from the SSW Law Firm for the first time under the SSW Academy conducted Legal Workshops for the Food Industry. During the meeting which lasted several hours, our specialists talked about legal aspects of the regulated sector, among other about the rules of labelling in the food industry, about methods of protecting names and shapes of products, personal data protection in the marketing activity, and the latest decisions of the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKIK) for the food industry with regard to competition-restricting practices.
